You probably have all the things you need for this workshop, but I’ve included in this list things that you will definitely need and some you may wish to try. Those in bold are recommended for the workshop, but not required. We will do lots of exercises, so come prepared to use paper and paint. What you can’t get locally, order from Cheap Joe’s, Jerry’s, Dick Blick or Pearl. Email or call me with any questions.

Good brands are Holbein (H), Winsor & Newton(WN), DaVinci, and American Journey (AJ-Cheap Joe’s) . My extended palette is below. If you have a warm and cool version of the primaries and one of each secondary, you can paint just fine in this class.

BRUSHES:
You can get by with a large flat and a large round, but it is good to also have a small (1/2”) flat and
(1/4”) round brush. Buy carefully!
- 3/4” or 1” flat W/C
- 3/8” round W/C
- 1/2” flat W/C
- 1/4” round W/C
OTHER EQUIPMENT:
Whatever you’re used to using is fine. Those who prefer working on a board or easel may do so. Those who don’t, fine. I like soft pencils to sketch the subject (no. 1 office or “2B” drawing pencil).
If you like, bring along an ink pen to sketch, but we’ll primarily be doing paintings.
PAPER: (Don’t try to paint on less than 140#!!)
- 140 lb. watercolor paper, size and surface you prefer. (Arches will always treat you right!) 1 or 2 sheets will be enough, unless you paint large.
- 140 lb. Watercolor pad or block, 11”x15” (Arches if available)
- A small natural (silk) sponge
- A small sheet or two of drafting film or acetate (8x10). You can usually find this at an engineering or drafting supply place.
Also: plain bond or xerox paper (4-5 shts.) and several sheets of tracing paper (big enough to cover your pad paper) and, if you have one, a transfer sheet, 8 1/2x11 or larger
PALETTE:
Any palette you like, from a white Melmac plate to a ready- made plastic palette.
STUFF:
You already have this, but don’t forget it.
- Box of Kleenex (no other brand)
- One roll of Viva Paper Towels
- Masking tape or artist’s tape
- Scissors and/or sharp knife (Xacto)
- Pencil for layout
- A wide mouth water holder, at least a quart
SOURCE MATERIAL: You must bring your own source material to work from; sketches, photos, etc.
ABOVE ALL: Bring a good attitude -
Remember we’re here to enjoy ourselves!
